Let me start with the bad news.
The Fiat 500 is still very popular.
This means that bargains are hard to find.
The prices remain relatively high.
That's an advantage when you want to sell it on.
The price will be relatively high, giving you more in return.
This hip city car confirms that the Italians excel at building small cars.
It looks nice, on the inside as well with a colored panel on the dash.
Especially red, like this one, stands out.
From the outside... I don't think a lot of people hate the 500.
I can imagine men would want something bigger for themselves.
There's over 1,300 of them on AutoScout.
What's strange (or not): the most common color is white.
Over 300 pieces, which is over a quarter.
Grey is a popular color as well.
The cool part is, you can get more funky colors as well.
Beige? Can be found. Yellow, orange, or red like this one.
PRICES minimum 7,695 euros average 11,595 euros maximum 20,800 euros
The 500 is also available as a convertible, which has more of ...
... a large sunroof than driving in the open air.
This is a glass roof. It's almost the same, but cannot be opened in the sun.
Over 10 percent on offer are 500C, the convertible.
If you want something exotic, you'll have to buy a diesel.
Only 8 are currently for sale, because they were expensive when bought new.
The Dutch tax system isn't that kind for small diesels.
It is a nice engine, though.
GASOLINE 1.2-liter (68 hp) 1.4-liter (99 hp) 0.9-liter TwinAir 2-cylinder turbo (64 hp) 0.9-liter TwinAir 2-cylinder turbo (84 hp)
EXOTICS 1.3-liter diesel (JTD, 74 hp) Abarth 500: 1.4 T-Jet (133 hp) Abarth 500: 1.4 T-Jet (158 hp)
Beware of a diesel used on short trips only.
Diesels don't like that. Everything clogs up.
The 1.3 JTD in the 500 needs an oil change more often.
That engine needs longer trips; reach optimal temperatures.
There aren't many other problems with the Fiat 500.
Electronics, but that is rare.
The ignition key isn't recognized sometimes and requires a code.
You can fix this with a complicated procedure, but then it works again.
A leaking AC - on the fuse box - gives some electronic problems.
However, this is not very common.
The engines have 4 cylinders, but the later TwinAirs are 2-cylinder turbos.
Some turbos were malfunctioning, but those are replaced in a recall.
That's something to check out.
Other things to know: the 500 has a better rear suspension since 2010.
If you think it's too bouncy, you might want to look for a younger one.
These are all of the problems.
The Fiat 500 has a manual transmission and a dual logic automatic.
The latter is a robotized manual, so you lose the clutch pedal.
Not the world's fastest transmission, and gear changes aren't smooth.
There's only one clutch.
When it's really rough, there might not be enough oil in the transmission.
This will need refilling. It can be caused by a leak.
In short, a Fiat with quality and it looks good. Still modern, of course.
Then again, it's still being sold new.
Prices can be high, but there are nice ones out there.
Another good tip is to look for a car that already has a lot of options.
They were expensive when new, but the second hand prices don't always show.
