Tip:
Highlight text to annotate it
X
I'm going to create a text block in the bottom-right corner.
I'm going to use the Rectangle tool and create
a rectangle then convert it to a text frame.
I've drawn a rectangle
Ctrl+Q converts that to curves.
Select the Shape tool.
Select the top left-hand node
finger on Ctrl and drag to the right.
Ctrl helps me to constrain to a straight line.
Spacebar reselects the Pick tool.
Now to convert this to a text frame, right-click and
choose Frame Type - Create Empty Text Frame.
I'm going to insert placeholder text.
Right-click and choose Insert Placeholder Text.
It's a great new addition in X6.
This gives me the ability to choose font, size, color, etc.
even though I don’t know what text I will use.
I'm going to open some dockers and a toolbar.
Window - Dockers and choose Object Properties docker.
Then, Window - Dockers and choose the Connect Tray.
I'll minimise the tray for later use.
Then, Layout and choose the Layout Toolbar.
I want to remove the outline of the text frame object.
From the color menu, choose No Color.
Now I'll collapse the Outline and Fill areas which
reveals more of the Character area or, I could click
Character which brings that area to the top of the docker.
I want the font Frutiger, and a point size of 13,
a Uniform fill of white, and right justified.
To right justify, I need to select Paragraph
for the other options, then click Align right.
With the Rectangle tool I will add some more rectangles
which I'll later convert to text frames.
I'm doing this to get a feel for where I will place things.
I also want one across the bottom of the page,
so I'll move this frame up for more room.
If I select the new rectangles and tap L
they align to the left and I'll align the others later.
Now I'll convert each rectangle to a text frame.
Using the Layout Toolbar makes it a fast operation.
I want to zoom in on these two text frames because
I’m going to link them together.
Select one frame, hold Shift & select the other
then Text - Paragraph Text and choose Link.
Now when I Insert Placeholder Text, the text
flows from one text frame to the other.
It's great for flowing text page to page & column to column.
To remove the outline around the rectangles,
I'll right-click on the No Color well.
Z for the Zoom tool
and zoom in to these text frames and then
Spacebar to go back to the Pick tool, deselect and
View - Grid & I’ll turn on the Baseline Grid.
The baseline grid is used to align text on a page,
text looks better when it's aligned.
I can adjust the grid if I
double-click on the rulers and choose Grid.
I can set spacing, start point, & set Snap to grid etc.
Another way to turn on Snap to grid is the Snap to menu,
I will turn on Snap to the Baseline Grid here.
hold Shift and select each individual text frame
then right-click & choose Align to Baseline Grid.
It looks better perfectly aligned across the grid.
Snap to helps me move each text frame and stay aligned.
The frames easily snap and align as you can see.
Notice the red text frame around the this block of text.
It indicates there's more text available, but the
text frame is not large enough to display all.
See the square with an arrow, it means the text frame needs
to be stretched to show all the text. I don't want that,
so I am simply going to delete some text.
And the red text frame disappears.
To turn off Show Text Frames, I can go to Text,
Paragraph Text Frame and deselect Show Text Frames.
When I deselect, the text frames disappear.
The text frame reappears when its selected along with
any text frames that are linked to that frame.
If I select this one, both highlight at the same time.
F4, View & turn off the Baseline Grid display.
Now I want to align some objects.
The new alignment guides add to the many methods I can use.
I will demonstrate a few, including Alignment guides.
First I'll select this rectangle then
P aligns perfectly centre to the page.
Holding Ctrl I can move down, staying horizontally centre.
If I use Shift and select two objects,
the last object selected will be aligned to.
R aligns to the right.
Hold Shift & select. The last object selected
is aligned to when I use L to left align.
These are all perfectly aligned now.
In the next phase I’ll use alignment guides.
I'll zoom into the top area of the design.
I’ve been working on body text and now I want to
add title text, so I will select the Title text layer.
Back to Object Properties and I’ll select the Text tool.
I'm going to type the word Art, then I will paste
some text I've already copied to the clipboard,
Ctrl+V to paste.
Whenever I import or paste text I’m asked,
Do you want to maintain the fonts and formatting?
Meaning, do you want it to look the same as the document,
Maintaining only formatting, or do you want to discard both?
I want to discard both and apply my own, click OK.
Ctrl+Spacebar re-selects the Pick tool.
TIP: any time text is outside of a text frame,
right-click and drag the text inside the text frame,
release your mouse and choose Move Into Text or Copy Into Text.
I'm going to choose Move Into Text.
Selecting the text frame, I'm going to right justify.
Using the Character area I will make some changes.
Increase Pt size, it's great seeing a real-time preview,
I’ll set 33 Pt and I will change the font
to Frutiger Serif. Notice as I hover over fonts,
how you can see a preview in real time.
I'll just stretch the frame out a little.
Now I’ll use Paragraph to make a few more changes.
Even line spacing previews in real time.
The preview is quite valuable.
I'm going to set the spacing down to 77
and then change the character spacing.
Again this spacing previews in real time.
I'll set the character spacing to 33
and stretch the frame a little more to accommodate.
I think that looks really effective.
Because X6 now uses OpenType features,
I’m going to demonstrate it to you.
Selecting one or two characters or an entire line.
Activates the OpenType features preview.
As I hover you can see changes in real time.
The preview pane is actually displaying the effect.
This allows me to see the possibilities and choose
which OpenType features to apply.
I'm going to go with small caps.
I prefer the square upper and lowercase look
so I'm going to select that option.
Selecting the numbers activates the interactive preview
and displays all the possible options.
I’ll hover for a real-time preview and I’m going to
select Proportional Oldstyle. It looks quite good.
I'm going to remove the outline by right-clicking
On the No Color well and start work on Art.
As I move Art the small word grid appears, because
earlier I turned on Snap to baseline grid,
In the Snap to menu.
I'm going to turn that off now.
In Character, I’ll increase the point size
to a large size of 240 Pts and reposition.
Now I’ll set the font to Frutiger Neue.
That looks quite nice.
Set a fill color of white to both Art and
to the top text frame.
Now I’ll align the objects using Alignment Guides,
I know if I select & move to the right,
I'm aligning to the text below on the right side.
I'll move and align this to the right side also.
Now I know I'm perfectly aligned.
F4 zoom out and let's go to the next video.
