BMW needed something new.
They sold 3-Series and 3-Series Tourings.
However, a customer told them the car is too low and not spacious enough.
Then you can get a 5-Series, but that one is a lot more expensive.
So, BMW decided to check their stock.
They took the elongated 3-Series' chassis sold in China ...
... and made it into a GT version, like they did with the BMW 5 GT.
It's a different kind of car. Let's start with the design.
Everyone will have an opinion on this car. As do I, but I'll let you judge.
I've been strict with it in an earlier article on our website.
Now I've seen it in real life, I'll have to take back these words.
It's not a handsome car. I don't like it as much as the normal 3-Series.
However, you can't compare it to the butt-ugly 5-Series GT.
It's a distinct silhouette, sitting down on its ***, but you're the judge.
We're driving the 335i with an automatic.
That's a great engine, although I haven't driven the new 3-Series yet.
That's the strongest engine you can get for the 3 GT.
Don't expect an M-model.
It does have an M-pack, thus options, the suspension, etc.
There won't be an M3 GT. That just won't happen.
It doesn't suit the nature of the car, because it's comfortable.
Yesterday we briefly drove a car without an M-pack.
It was a lot softer than this one. This one has a stiffer chassis.
Especially when you switch on Sport or Sport Plus, it'll get sturdy.
It's not really a driver's car. The 3 GT was built for comfort.
You notice this in the back seat. It's 2,4 inches higher than normal.
The whole car is 4.3 inches higher, I think.
You mainly notice it in the back.
2.8 inches extra leg space. Okay, the seat has been moved forward.
I can sit here just fine and let myself be driven.
Let's do this. James, please take that corner. You were doing that.
The funny part is, you'd expect this car to be more expensive than ...
... the normal 3-Series Touring, but it's not.
Comparable versions differ by a small 2,000 euros.
That's why BMW expects to partly sell the car to their own customers.
People who are looking for a higher entry and such.
They also expect to win new customers, because no one else offers this.
Audi has an A5 Sportback, a similarly shaped car, but it's lower.
A lower entry, a lower seating, so it's a different way of driving.
This is BMW's gamble. They want to take in the other brands' customers.
Meanwhile they honor their own customers' height and space wishes.
A summary of the 3 GT: not really a driver's car.
You won't drift it, but it is possible.
